Scarborough
Sixth Form College
One
Week exchange of Year 11 (17 year-old) pupils.
The first exchange took place in 1996and there have since been three
exchanges.
Scarborough Sixth Form
College receives students from 6 feeder schools in Scarborough and Filey each
year. Students study either
subjects which are already familiar to them from their GCSEs or completely new
subjects like Psychology or Sociology.
800 Students study between 3 and 5 subjects at A Level. About 70 teachers teach 30 different subjects.
Our Principal is called Mrs Nicola Watson.
Students, for whom A levels are too academic, can also study GNVQs, in subjects
such as Business Studies, which may also be studied in combination with German.
Each year an average of 40 students take German.
(German is increasingly taken as a second language combined with either
French or (here in Scarborough) with Spanish.)
In 1998 7 German students (from Berlin and Munich) spent 6 months with us,
continuing their chosen studies in English.
A similar number are expected to join us next year.
There is a friendly atmosphere in the college.
A more relaxed atmosphere appropriate to the age of the pupils replaces
the more formal style of the British school system.
The relationship between student and teacher is seen as partnership, as
the students take over responsibility for their own studies.
