ABOUT THE PROJECT
A Two Month Collaborative Project Between Purchase College and Hochschule Furtwangen UniversityDuring the last months, 16 students from SUNY/Purchase College, located 30 miles north of New York City, have worked with 17 students from Hochschule Furtwangen University, located in the Black Forest of Germany. While we were 3000 miles apart, we got to know each other through an exchange of videos and writing. We also had a class web site where we were chatting, sharing photos, music and videos and getting to know more about each other.
Each class had established teams of two or three students who had chosen one of the themes: Surveillance, Body, Mirror or Transformation. These teams were paired with a team from the other school who has chosen the same theme. These groups of four or five students worked together for the next two months on both writing and video projects, so they had time to get to know each other.
The model we are using has its roots in the Surrealist Art practice called The Exquisite Corpse. In this method one person or team creates a written or drawn fragment that their partner must answer or complete. In the case of our writing, this exchange went back and forth at least six times, while with the videos, which take much more time to complete, the exchange happened four times.
